Creating the back cover

creating the back cover

Wine bottle

We edited the wine bottle and put it on to our phone case, we decided to use a wine bottle as a form of iconography because we have used it throughout our video, immediately the audience will be able to link the wine bottle back to our music video, it carries on with the imagery of alcoholism. We decided to make the bottle all black as it as it will continue on with the dark, depressing tone of our entire media project. We used the clone tool to change the top of the bottle from red to black in order to make to make the colour of the rose look a lot brighter. We then used the Lasso tool to highlight the part we wanted to remove of the rose (the stem) so that it would appear that the rose is inside the bottle.

The gold rose

We chose include the golden rose along with the bottle as the main image because it links with several aspects of our music video and ancillary task. The rose followers are commonly given to show love, the golden colour not only represents the wealth that most rappers tend to show off, but also represents that love was once vibrant & ‘rich’ between the male character and the mysterious female character. As well as that the two colours work together visually.

The black rose

Used for the whole background of the back cover by using the magic wand tool, the black rose symbolises dying love. Using the big gold rose against the black rose background was used in connection to one another. It shows how love was once alive and vibrant between these two characters, but then something fatal happened, possibly death? And love is now dead, which has led to this self destructive depressive state he is going through whilst using alcohol to self-medicate.

linking research to the back cover

We wanted the roses to symbolise love but at the same time symbolise the fact that something fatal happening, we wanted the use of them to raise questions about if she died and if she’s a ghost or is she just a figment of his imagination because he’s drunk? When researching we came across the image of the red roses against a pale pink background, we thought that this layout would be a good fit for our back cover but decided to adapt the colours. We decided on a black and gold theme, the black representing the depression and the ominous nature of our music video, and the gold representing the fact that love was once vibrant (and the wealth that a lot of rappers conventionally rap about and portray as part of their image) As well as that we decided collectively as a group that it would be best to incorporate a bottle of alcohol as alcohol plays a large part in our music video (used as a self-medication tool for the male characters depression).

song titles we chose to feature on the back cover
  • Swimming Pools
  • Poetic Justice
  • Art of Peer Pressure
  • Wicked Games
  • Monster
  • Survival
  • Devil May Cry
  • Echoes of Silence
  • Disturbia
  • The Party after the Party

Our song titles were quite an important feature to our back cover, we chose these songs titles because all of them link to the disturbing atmosphere of our music video. For example titles like Echoes of silence and Disturbia connects with the fact that he is secluded from the outside, in the silence he thinks about the female character and images of her begin to re-appear and they disturb him.

adding the final touches

Barcode: We found an image of a barcode on Google and edited it in to our back cover. Then using the clone stamp tool we removed some of the numbers and replaced them with other numbers so we could change the code to ensure that it doesn’t already exist due to copyright infringement

Copyright information: We felt it would be best to use the information on the record label  and the producers originally used on Kendrick Lamar’s album, because of the fact that our music video is done using his song and the information about his record label etc is correct. Also because we have already written to the record label letting them know we would be using this song in our media project there is no copyright infringement.

trademark signs

Again, we decided to use the real trademark symbols associated with the record labels Kendrick Lamar is signed as its the most logical thing to do since we are using one of his songs promoted by these record labels. Including the symbols and the copyright information give a more realistic, professional look to our back cover.

the dotted lines

The dotted lines show the design that will be on the left and the right side of the CD case. In the dotted lines we decided to include the name of our album, the artist, record label and CD number as it adds a professional feel to our ancillary task because this is what most CD cases would include, we were able to achieve this by using different layers. Its important to note that throughout creating the ancillary task and even the beginning title of our music video we have used the same font and the same colour writing.
