Creating the CD

how our research influenced our CD

Production

This CD cover was created using Adobe Illustrator using a circle template. We decided to it would be best to use the same Birch STD font which has been used for the rest of ancillary task and in our music video so that continuity can be seen. Using the transform tool, the  letters were then spread out so that they would be the same space away from each corner of the CD.

The image was then cropped to make it smaller to make it easier to get rid of the excess image and the A4 canvas size. After this, the quick selection tool was used to select the areas around the image that needed to be removed, so that what we would have left was just the circular CD area.

first draft

re-creating the CD cover

After completing the first draft we decided to keep the design but change the colour to black and white in order to fit in with the research of the three black CD’s we did and also to give the effect of smoke which we originally wanted for our inside back cover. We felt that the black and white would match more with the rest of our digipak as the primary colour of every other feature is black showing continuity. If you compare the two, you can see that the black and white which gives a smoke effect looks much better than the coloured flames because the orange flames look overpowering and clashes with the gold writing on some of the other features of our digipak, as well as that the black goes with the dark depressing tone that we are trying to achieve with the digipak which links to our music video.

additional features

In all the CD’s we researched it was a conventional feature for them to include text on the CD and the record label logo, we decided that to give our CD  a professional look we would have to do the same. Two designs were created so that we could choose which one we felt was best, one with white text and one with black text. Like we expected and as our research showed us, the white text against the black background worked best, making the writing stand out unlike the black tet which gets washed out by the black background.

above are the trademark signs which were used we chose these two because all of in all of our research only two trademark signs are included on the CD, the compact digital audio trademark sign and the main record label trademark sign which in our case was ‘TOP DAWG ENTERTAINMENT’. Including the trademark signs gave out CD the professional and realistic look which we saw on the CDs we researched. The text used around the edge of the CD cover text stating the executive, producers and photographers names, along with our names because we made the front cover. we also included the record label information. As we saw in our research this was a common feature on the majority of CD covers
