Location No. 1: spare room
In
order to make the spare room as dark as we imagined, we covered all the windows
using a blanket and used only a torch to produce light. This created a deep
blue tint which corresponds with the blue and orange tones that we originally
wanted for our video and that we highlighted used our research.
Below are print screen from previous lighting research in
comparison to the shots we took. You can clearly to see the similarity with
both images. Both have that distinctive blue tint and are surrounded by
darkness with light only focusing on their faces to highlight their miserable
facial expressions. However we decided to do a mid-shot rather than the
close-up shot used in our research so we Connor holding the bottle in a subtle
way in order to highlight the message of alcoholism in our video.
location No. 2: bathroom
The
group chose to use Cally’s bathroom to film the bath scenes as she had the
marble walls which we had previously seen in our research, and which would successfully
produce orange tone lighting. We made the orange tone lighting which we desired
more intense by using the light produced by a lamp shining thorough the slightly
opened bathroom door. The images below show the differences between before and
after we made the orange tone more intense. On the left, you can see that the
footage we were getting was too bright therefore wasn’t producing our desired
tone. On the right you can see that the lighting changes to a more suitable
tone after we controlled the light.
The bridge was important because it
overlooks the cars passing beneath him whilst he is walking alone holding a
bottle of alcohol. This location was important for us because it visually represents
time and life passing by whilst he is stuck in his depression and missing out
on life due to his excessive drinking. As well as that the cars are symbolic,
they create questions for the viewer, they start to wonder did the enigma girl
get into a car accident? Was she in fact hit by him maybe due to drink driving?
location No. 4: school corridor
We used our school corridor to
film the phone, clock and teddy bear scene. Using school facilities was convenient
because we film and re-film minor parts of our video during lessons and free
time effectively. We controlled lighting by asking teachers permission to turn
off the lights. We set up the mise-en-scene by burrowing a desk from a
classroom, adding a blanket and burrowing a male student’s school bag, we then
used a torch to highlight the mise-en-scene whilst we kept the area dark.
location No. 5: garden
we decided to use Cally's garden as it is quite big with nothing in it therefore being able to visually show loneliness and emptiness of the main boy.

in this image you can see just how big the garden is and how it helps to symbolise the loneliness etc. |
This location changed when we went to film and couldn’t get permission
to film in the bluewater corridors. We chose the corridors as they had grey
brickwork which would have given the tone of isolation which would have linked
to the brickwork behind the clock which showed confinement. We decided to still
film the running scene but in the car park instead. This ended up working in
our favour as the footage came out looking better than we planned. Even though
it was quite dark the street lamps and car lights helped to give that disturbing,
unsettling look which we anticipated.

as
you can see the lighting of the car, along with her being surrounded by so many
cars and the limited lighting all works well as it creates the right tone and
links back to the cars which were filmed on the bridge. Because this footage
was used at the very beginning of our music video, immediately the audience
begins to question, who is this girl? What is she running from? is she a ghost
or is she alive? etc. it creates the enigma character who is then used
throughout the video.
