Research into location

Location No. 1: spare room

In order to make the spare room as dark as we imagined, we covered all the windows using a blanket and used only a torch to produce light. This created a deep blue tint which corresponds with the blue and orange tones that we originally wanted for our video and that we highlighted used our research.

Below are print screen from previous lighting research in comparison to the shots we took. You can clearly to see the similarity with both images. Both have that distinctive blue tint and are surrounded by darkness with light only focusing on their faces to highlight their miserable facial expressions. However we decided to do a mid-shot rather than the close-up shot used in our research so we Connor holding the bottle in a subtle way in order to highlight the message of alcoholism in our video.

location No. 2: bathroom

The group chose to use Cally’s bathroom to film the bath scenes as she had the marble walls which we had previously seen in our research, and which would successfully produce orange tone lighting. We made the orange tone lighting which we desired more intense by using the light produced by a lamp shining thorough the slightly opened bathroom door. The images below show the differences between before and after we made the orange tone more intense. On the left, you can see that the footage we were getting was too bright therefore wasn’t producing our desired tone. On the right you can see that the lighting changes to a more suitable tone after we controlled the light.

this is an image from our initial research for our bathroom scene. We’ve used the marble bathroom tiles against a white bath tub just as they have and used the orange colour tint. Our footage is slightly darker than our research footage however this is because the tone of our music video is slightly more disturbing.

location No. 3: the bridge

The bridge was important because it overlooks the cars passing beneath him whilst he is walking alone holding a bottle of alcohol. This location was important for us because it visually represents time and life passing by whilst he is stuck in his depression and missing out on life due to his excessive drinking. As well as that the cars are symbolic, they create questions for the viewer, they start to wonder did the enigma girl get into a car accident? Was she in fact hit by him maybe due to drink driving?

location No. 4: school corridor

We used our school corridor to film the phone, clock and teddy bear scene. Using school facilities was convenient because we film and re-film minor parts of our video during lessons and free time effectively. We controlled lighting by asking teachers permission to turn off the lights. We set up the mise-en-scene by burrowing a desk from a classroom, adding a blanket and burrowing a male student’s school bag, we then used a torch to highlight the mise-en-scene whilst we kept the area dark.

here is a picture of how the mise-en-scene was set up, this was supposed to imitate a typical desk that would be found in a boys room. even though we didn't include this in the video, a pan shot that moved across this location and then focused on the phone. We didn't include this is in the video because when i tried to add it in it didn't fit in with the general theme and it wasn't an important feature in our music video.
we used this footage as the clock scene. we attached the clock to the white brick was as a way to symbolise confinement in his mind as time goes by. we moved the torch to an angle to create a shadow in the already dark room. The shadow makes the clock stand out more and appear ominous. The white walls and the white clock visually links to the rest of our video as Connor wears white shirt in most our video and Lilly wears white in the bath scene to symbolise purity.
the phone scene was also shot in the school corridor. despite not being able to see the mise-en-scene it still works as the surroundings are dark until the phone lights up showing the messages and the natural light being emitted illuminates the area. The black connotes his depression which is linked to alcohol. The messages show the audience that something is not quite right; the text from his mum comes first saying ‘i’m worried...’ highlighting that there is a problem. However the fact that the text message from his friend comes through second removing the mother’s message off the screen indicates that he will choose the alcohol instead of getting help.

location No. 5: garden

we decided to use Cally's garden as it is quite big with nothing in it therefore being able to visually show loneliness and emptiness of the main boy.

in this image you can see just how big the garden is and how it helps to symbolise the loneliness etc.
this footage was shot on the patio as the brickwork successfully adds a slight orange tint which links back to the colour scheme used throughout our music video and (can be linked back to our bath scene research).  As well as that the ash shown on the floor adds including his shoes, the lighter and the pictures, add a blue contrast with the orange tint.

location No. 6: Bluewater car park
This location changed when we went to film and couldn’t get permission to film in the bluewater corridors. We chose the corridors as they had grey brickwork which would have given the tone of isolation which would have linked to the brickwork behind the clock which showed confinement. We decided to still film the running scene but in the car park instead. This ended up working in our favour as the footage came out looking better than we planned. Even though it was quite dark the street lamps and car lights helped to give that disturbing, unsettling look which we anticipated.

as you can see the lighting of the car, along with her being surrounded by so many cars and the limited lighting all works well as it creates the right tone and links back to the cars which were filmed on the bridge. Because this footage was used at the very beginning of our music video, immediately the audience begins to question, who is this girl? What is she running from? is she a ghost or is she alive? etc. it creates the enigma character who is then used throughout the video.

this image shows the different one of the many positions which Cally and Poppy stood in order to capture the footage from different angles. This was important as I was able to edit the different clips together to create an erratic feel to this scene

It was important to us that the locations were varied as each shot needed to highlight the passing of time despite the state of our model being the same throughout the video to highlight the depth of his depression and alcohol abuse, this was an essential aspect of our music video. The locations vary from light to dark as this highlights the ellipsis of time, it shows that as it goes from day to night he can’t stop thinking about this mysterious girl, he is stuck in this repetitive cycle of hopelessness, drinking his sorrows away. Towards the end of the video we see him burning the pictures of himself and Lilly making the audience think, maybe finally he can move on with his life, however the fact that the video ends on an image of Lilly indicates that his attempt to get out of this cycle (by burning the photos) was unsuccessful and he is still stuck in this dark, repetitive state.
